Standing Nato Maritime Group Two (SNMG-2) has concluded its participation in Nato’s anti-submarine warfare (ASW), Exercise Dynamic Manta 15 (DYMA 15).

Started on 11 September, the exercise involved ships, submarines, and aircraft and personnel from nine Allied nations.

It also involved submarines from France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, the UK, and the US, under the control of Nato Submarine Command (COMSUBNATO).

Surface ships from France, Germany, Italy, Turkey and the US also joined the exercise under the command of SNMG-2.

Conducted in the Central Mediterranean Sea, the exercise aimed to offer participants with complex and challenging warfare training to improve interoperability and proficiency in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare.

According to Nato, the exercise saw all the capabilities from nine nations operated together as a cohesive force, practicing common tactics and procedures.

Nato Submarines commander rear admiral Matthew A Zirkle (US Navy) earlier said: “The large number of participating units in this year’s exercise is a clear demonstration to Nato’s commitment to the maritime domain and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.”

The training programmes included capability testing of personnel, systems and sensors, from basic serials to more advanced exercises.

In May this year, Nato conducted another anti-submarine warfare exercise, Dynamic Mongoose, off the west coast of Norway, with the support of ten allied nations alongside partner nation Sweden.
